Ocean Conservation charity Surfers Against Sewage, in partnership with Iceland supermarket, wanted to highlight all the battles activists were fighting to rid our world of avoidable plastic. The idea was to create an awards night that could shine a light on these heroes and inspire others to join the cause. We designed a bold shield logo made from a landscape to represent celebration and protection.
A lot of care and attention went into creating branded merchandise that was incredibly eco-conscious and plastic-free. These included bamboo fiber lanyards, wooden etched name tags, canvas banners, and techniques like vegetable ink print. Even the stage was made from reclaimed wooden pallets.
To open the awards night we created an energetic and impactful video to celebrate the nominees. The film repurposed old footage and juxtaposed it with the identity's bold linear graphics. This was all held together by a narrative centered around drawing a line under plastic pollution once and for all.
The shortlisted awards shields were created from wooden offcuts. Each was unique and made from three different types of reclaimed wood.
Plastic Free Awards 2021
Bringing the awards to people's homes
After a rocky start, the 2021 awards went fully remote. We created a new film to acknowledge the extra effort and determination eco-warriors gave during the pandemic, and found fun and bold ways to bring the awards to life for nominees and viewers around the world.
Plastic Free Awards 2023
Recognising eco-warriors and their battles
With the brand now firmly rooted in the environmental sector, we evolved the strategy to focus more on recognition. The shield was used as a framing device to highlight these heroes and their efforts, while the film explored the question 'What does recognition mean to you?'.

Will is fantastic to work with, his ability to get passionate and enthusiastic about the campaigns and really buy into them adds an extra layer of confidence to his designs. He was happy to share his own thoughts and ideas but also took on board our comments and always provided a range of options from the start - usually making it hard to pick just one! Will's innovative approach, attention to detail, and willingness to explore new concepts were pivotal in helping us achieve our target for nominations for the Plastic Free Awards. As well as increasing the inclusivity and accessibility of the process. From the planning and promoting right through to the in-person awards ceremony, Will's branding and language stood strong and created a truly magical project. Will is a joy to work with and I couldn't recommend him enough!
